For comic recs:
Flamewar (IDW2)
For Flamewar
Woman World by Aminder Dhaliwal
Flamewar doesn’t me as the kind of person who can sit still reading for very long so strip comics seem to make most sense for her. I recommend woman world over others because of its tongue-in-cheek sense of humour and the close knit relationships. They have was Streamteam wants.

For you
Birdking by Daniel Freedman and CROM
If you’re a fan of Flamewar you will probably enjoy this one! It’s the perfect mix of Hellboy and Nimona: moody and fantastical atmosphere with a spunky blacksmith protagonist ready to take on the world and everything evil in it.

Bigender Books
Books that feature bigender characters, are written by bigender authors, or both!
Bi-gender: A Candid Nonbinary Memoir by James-Beth Merritt: A memoir of the author's experience living as both a man and a woman.
Baker Thief by Claudie Arseneault: A magical gemstone is stolen by a baker who is investigating the disappearance of her sister. The protagonist is bigender and aromantic.
Come Out, Come Out by Natalie C. Parker: A horror novel about queer teenagers who accidentally invoke a spirit that erases their knowledge of their identities. One of the protagonists is nonbinary, genderfluid, and bigender.
Homesick by Nino Cipri: A short story collection exploring the theme of home and featuring queer and trans characters. The short story "A Silly Love Story" includes a bigender love interest.
The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea by Maggie Tokunda-Hall: A woman disguises herself as a man to live aboard a pirate ship. He falls in love with a wealthy imperial daughter traveling to an arranged marriage. One of the protagonists is genderfluid and bigender.
Nimona by ND Stevenson: A graphic novel in which a chaotic shapeshifter teams up with a supervillain to wreak havoc on the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics. The author is transmasculine and bigender and uses he/him pronouns.
Reality In Bloom by Annette Covrigaro: A prose and poetry chapbook about queerness, mental health, and religion. The author is bigender, gay, and Jewish.
Somebody Told Me by Mia Siegert: After being assaulted, a bigender teenager moves in with their uncle, a Catholic priest, and has to come to terms with their trauma. The author is bigender and uses all pronouns.
The Unbalancing by R. B. Lemberg: A novel set in the fantasy world Birdverse, where the Starkeeper and a poet work together to save their home. The story includes a side character who identifies as the fantasy world equivalent of bigender. The author is bigender and uses they/them pronouns.
Venom & Vow by Anna-Marie McLemore and Elliott McLemore: YA fantasy about a transgender prince pretending to be his brother, and a bigender dama/assassin from an enemy kingdom. One of the authors is bigender and uses they/them pronouns.

Releasing Nimona on the last day of pride month 2023 was such a great move because it’s a really needed piece of media right now. Lots of countries that legalised gay marriage years ago have been grappling with this rising TERF narrative of “if you’re gay it’s whatever but if you’re trans, non-binary or gender non-conforming in some way you’re a PERVERT! A MONSTER trying to GROOM CHILDREN!” The outrage against simple things like pronouns and drag events, and the movement against gender affirming healthcare have reached a terrifying peaks for contemporary times.
So a kid’s movie set in a fictional country with controlling government officials with personal agendas, with an openly gay couple but also a shape-shifting kid who cannot even be afford to be out is our reality in the US today. Nimona’s feelings about her vibe, body and form, her insistence that she is only “Nimona” no matter what she looks like and her aversion to “small-minded questions” together forms such a beautiful allegory about trans, genderfluid individuals.
Ballister asks her to be a girl, but for whose sake? It’s only for the comfort of people who refuse to understand her, and would rather see her die than let her be herself. And it’s this widespread rejection and loneliness that has eventually made Nimona indifferent to pain, that makes her feel suicidal.
In the end, it is another member of the LGBTQ+ community that truly sees and accepts Nimona for who she is. And that should be a reminder that we cannot let them divide us. Trans people stood up for the rest of us and made historical change happen, and we need to do the same for them. Besides, cis queer people are only the “good ones” until they’re done with trans people and then will turn on us.

Hi! Drew this based over this drawing!
Also some other drawings and thoughts under the cut :]
-While I was drawing this I got reminded of this fic I wrote where Nimona was like, Boss, get a paternity test, this baby looks nothing like you 🧍 while Ballister was resting on the bed after giving birth dhdjd
>I haven't re-read it in a long while but I'm sure that Nimona did mention the nine months and Baby coming out looking nothing like Ballister, and Ballister going 'Nine months and some weeks, but who's counting' 🧍
-Baby looks a lot like Ambrosius and all that, and even if he copies all of their mannerisms, he copies Ballister the most (he finds him the coolest), even when he's much older
Tumblr media
-Also Baby keeps calling Nimona 'Mimona' until he's like six and can say her name correctly, he just likes to call her that (the day he starts calling her Nimona she's like D: It was the end of an era shdjdh)
>Baby tried to call Ambrosius dad (instead of daddy) once and Ambrosius stopped him right then and there shdjdh
>Also Ballister leaning against a wall was based from memory on this image and if you look at the reference you'll realize they kindaa look like each other
(from the Nimona Concept art book whehe)
Tumblr media
-Also here's random drawings of them based on TikToks or memes I've seen djdjd
Tumblr media
-Also I drew this thing based over the three of them imagining how Baby would look, Ballister thinking of Ambrosius' baby pictures (he was the closest to how Baby actually looked), saying that Baby will look like Ambrosius.
>Ambrosius and Nimona thought that he'd come out looking more like Ballister, so there's Ambrosius trying to imagine Ballister as a Baby, and Nimona going whatever and imagining a very small Ballister just because.
Tumblr media
>Also I had a comic somewhere of Nimona shapeshifting into many Goldenheart kids and the guys going yeah or no I don't think he'll look like that, and I sneaked some other artist's fankids in there shjdhd I should look for it and actually finish it pipipi
Anyways that's it!

Anyway watch Nimona if you like:
Old men yaoi
Explicit trans allegory
Reluctant father figure who accidentally adopts a scruffy child
Heart warming queer film
Old men angsting over one another
When you can see a creator's writing style develop alongside their life experiences and their stories reflect that
Edit: putting this here but y'all do realize the "old men yaoi" is a joke from Nimonatwt right 😭 put those damn torches down

“Nimona is still Nimona,” he says. “She could be a whale or a dragon or shark or a cat, and she’s still Nimona. Just as she could be a girl or a boy or a woman or a man or anything else. All of these other parts are all factions of her. None of them are the end-all be-all of who she is. So that is kind of how I think of my own gender now. There is still some of that monster girl that I still hold very close to my heart.”
ND Stevenson
